“If
any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all
without finding fault, and it will be given to you” (James 1:5)
What’s the first step, then, in receiving
God’s wisdom?
“Ask,” I am always told when I ask a
congregation.
“Nope,” I say. “Lack.”
Unless you lack wisdom – that is, unless
you know you lack wisdom – you’ll
never ask God for it, James is telling us.
Perhaps wanting to look good in front of
me, folks will sometimes list off their spiritual achievements: “I know all about…”, “I have a great ability
to…”, “Believe me, I understand how to…”, and so on.
I have a friend who says, “You can’t perceive what you can’t
conceive.” She uses it to mean the same as “you can’t
know what you don’t know.”
We’ve got a lot left to learn about God, life and
relationships. You’re healthy to know
that. When we think to ourselves, “Wow,
I’ve got this all figured out,” we’re in trouble.
God promised, “I will
show you great and wonderful things
which you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:3).
Every day, God, help us to lack – wisdom, knowledge, love
– so that we can keep asking You for
more.
